French Placement Testing

To complete your placement assessment, you must take both the written and oral tests. The online written portion must be taken before the oral test.

Written Component

The written portion of the French Placement Test is taken online and covers reading, grammar, listening, and writing ability. Please see the table below for guidelines on when to take the written test. Incoming students must take the test over the summer during the specified time frame.

Important:  You will have only 60 minutes to complete the test once you log in and begin. Please allow enough time to take the entire test in a single sitting.

Next to the appropriate date range below, click the "Online" link, sign in with your SUNet ID and password, then click "Enroll in Course" when you are ready to begin.

Oral Component

After completing the written test, choose one of two options for completing the oral test.

  1. Sign up for an online interview over the summer using a link provided to you after the completion of the written exam.
  2. Take the oral exam on campus during orientation week - you must be seated in Cubberley Auditorium by 8:20am on Friday 9/21/18.

The on-campus oral consists of a Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI) developed by the Language Center and consistent with guidelines published by the Center for Applied Linguistics. This is a digital audio recorded interview with accompanying images. Students are asked questions as well as to describe events or pictures in the language, and their responses are recorded. Each interview is then assessed by trained raters.

The French on-campus oral exam will take place at the time and location listed below. Test begins  promptly at the specified time. Doors close 10 minutes prior.
