The Japanese language program offers courses in a variety of focuses and levels to meet your goals of learning Japanese. All courses are designed to build a solid foundation of language proficiency and promote your further development of all-around skills in Japanese.

Japanese Language, Culture & Communication Courses (5-unit Track)

This track is for those who wish to become fully proficient in the Japanese language. Students’ four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) are equally focused on in everyday instruction from Day 1. Recommended for those who are interested in majoring or minoring in Japanese, studying abroad, and understanding and embracing Japanese cultures.

  • First-Year: JAPANLNG 1, 2, 3
  • Second-Year: JAPANLNG 21, 22, 23
  • Third-Year: JAPANLNG 101, 102, 103

Graduate Level Course

This course is for graduate students and undergraduate students who successfully completed Japanese 103 or the equivalent. Reading and discussion of authentic writings both classical and contemporary, newspaper articles, documentaries and TV programs.

Japanese Language Essentials Courses (3-unit Track)

This track is for those who wish to build communication skills in Japanese but can’t fit in the 5- unit Japanese courses due to unit overload or other restrictions. This course sequence focuses on developing basic language skills in listening, reading, writing,  and speaking.

  • First-Year: JAPANLNG 4A, 4B, 4C
  • Second-Year: JAPANLNG 14A, 14B, 14C

Conversation Courses

These courses are for those who wish to focus solely on further developing their oral proficiency.

  • Intermediate Conversation: JAPANLNG 11A, 11B, 11C
  • From Intermediate to Advanced: JAPANLNG 31A, 31B, 31C
  • Advanced Conversation: JAPANLNG 111A, 111B, 111C
