Use  language to

  • with growing confidence in carrying out most informal and some formal face-to-face interactions about familiar and concrete topics, in culturally appropriate ways.
  • identify the main facts and some details on   short conventional narrative and descriptions,  oral interactions, short videos and clips clearly structured.
  • give extemporaneous presentations of 9-12 minutes in length with connected discourse of paragraph length conveying information about concrete topics
  • to demonstrate the ability to narrate and describe in the major time frames of present, past and future  in connected sentence, paragraph-length discourse
  • identify the main facts and some supporting details in authentic conventional narratives with a clear underlying structure
  • write narrative, descriptive, and comparative essays of 2-4 pages in connected paragraph length and structure and compose simple summaries
  • with increased frequency in self-monitoring, self-editing, and evaluation of own language development
  • follow and summarize shifting topics in a conversation
  • increasingly monitor their speech for features not characteristic of formal language
  • to start using circumlocution strategies to resolve difficulties in communication
  • identify and follow circumlocution strategies in conversations and texts
  • use circumlocution  strategies in oral presentations and papers to make clear points to the audience
  • to handle appropriately the essential linguistic challenges presented by a situation in which an unexpected turn of events occurs
  • identify and summarize unexpected turns of events in conversations and texts and corresponding solutions used

The track of courses for second-year Portuguese consists of two accelerated courses:

PortLang 11A (Accelerated Second-Year Portuguese – Part 1)

Fast-paced first half of the second-year sequence. Study and discussion of authentic reading and listening materials as a means of developing listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency. Students will advance from sentence-level toward paragraph-length and structure proficiency applying present, past and future time frames on non-personal topics, with an emphasis on oral production.

Pre-requisite: First year sequence, equivalent, or placement.

PortLang 12A (Accelerated Second-Year Portuguese – Part 2)

Continuation of 11A. Fast-paced second half of the second-year sequence. Study and discussion of authentic reading and listening materials as a means of developing listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency. Students will strengthen paragraph-length proficiency applying present, past and future time frames on non-personal topics, with an emphasis on written production.

Pre-requisite: Portuguese 11A, equivalent placement
